"Open water swimming is a sport where adventure and experience are always present. The salty sea, the shimmering lake, the flowing river or the mirror‑calm pond all await to embrace the swimmer, you."

Swimming, My Love

I started training for swimming with clear goals in my early thirties through masters swimming. Aches and pains from running and triathlon sped up the change of sport. Since then, I have taken part in dozens of masters swimming events in Finland and abroad, and through swimming I have found a core group of water-loving friends and a life partner.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, open water swimming communities have inspired island-hopping and the search for new experiences even abroad. The distances have grown longer, even though the goal is not to collect record-breaking kilometers.

This year’s adventure will once again be one or more long swims, preferably in the sea, at some of the destinations in the open water calendar: canyon, green water, warmth, downstream current.

Open water events can be found for almost every summer weekend. Abroad, a huge number of different types of events are organized, and with the help of the calendar it is possible to find the adventure of a lifetime.

The Open Water Calendar pages welcome as partners companies that want visibility within the swimming community and wish to help build an ever-growing open water swimming community.

Welcome to join the adventure in the world of open water and to get soaking wet with love for the water!

Did you know?
Using two swim caps keeps an open water swimmer warmer in cool water and helps keep goggles more securely in place, for example in rough waves. In some cases, such as when the race organizer’s cap feels uncomfortable, a preferred personal swim cap can be worn underneath. However, it is advisable to avoid an excessive feeling of tightness.
In some cases, such as certified crossings of the English Channel and the Catalina Channel, double caps are not allowed.

Gear tests are one backbone of the content

Open Water Calendar carries out impartial tests of products suitable for open water swimming and creates engaging comparisons. In addition to reliable equipment, swimmers need all sorts of things to fully enjoy their hobby.

A wide range of products that broadly meet the needs of open water swimmers are accepted for testing with no obligations attached. Contact details can be found on these pages and are also accessible via the link below. There is also the option to invite the team to explore interesting products or attend new product launches.

Product tests related to open water swimming are an important part of the content and will be published starting from April.

Did you know?
One of an open water swimmer’s best friends is a tow float. It increases safety and makes it possible to spot the swimmer from far away and from a boat. Tow floats are available in different sizes, colours and shapes. A float attached to the waist always slows the swimmer down to some extent. In recreational swimming this does not matter, but in races where the use of a float is mandatory, the choice of float can have a major impact on swimming speed. The difference can even be several seconds per 100 metres.
